“There's a saying in England: Where there's smoke, there's fire.”

From Russia with Love is a nice old-fashioned Bond film, which focuses more on the espionage element than brutal action. The Cold War is still very much alive and put to good use. This second Bond film is of course known for its legendary scenes on the train, the Orient Express. Sean Connery is in top form, and then a Bond film can't go wrong.

The spy story is well put together, and what is also striking is how good the film looks for its time. The whole part of the train is dark, and it's very clever the way the creators build the tension slowly until it explodes with the fight between Bond and Grant. But by just mentioning the train scenes, you're doing From Russia with Love short. The Istanbul section is also strong, and Istanbul looks great. Bianchi isn't a great Bond girl, but she tries her best and has a decent chemistry with Connery. Armendáriz is strong, and Lotte Lenya/Rosa Klebb with her poisonous pointed toe is an icon among the Bond villains.

Just had a look again. Upward line from Dr. No. A typical bond film as I prefer it. Cold war theme, conspiracy theory, SPECTER playing a sneaky game, travel and various film locations and a nice story. Also nice some action here and there for that time. By the way, be amazed by the quality of the special effects, the green screen scenes and various action scenes are well done. For me one of the founders for the rest of the series.

Certainly not a top notch film by any means, but I certainly enjoyed this in the Bond repertoire.

The story is already a lot better than the first (Dr. No), where in the first movie I just felt that the story was secondary (if there was a storyline at all) and it was more of an issue for us with Bond knowledge to be made, more thought has been given to this and it is easier to follow and empathize.

Found Connery, Shaw and Bianchi playing convincingly, and all the elements of a Bond movie were back in it.

There are again a lot of things that are exaggerated, like the fight scene on the train, and in the end with Klebb ''fighting'' with 007 I had to laugh, but hey, it's a movie where you don't think too much about it.

3*

I hereby keep a list for best bond film, which will of course be viewed in order:

1. From Russia With Love 3*

2. dr. No 2.5*
