Kiss of Death plot
"From her lips there is no escape!"
Nick Bianco is arrested during a jewelry heist. He refuses to rat on his buddies and ends up in prison because his partners have promised to support his wife and children. When it turns out that his wife committed suicide, he still betrays the other criminals and becomes a free man. His betrayal is not without consequences.

Good but not great film noir, with some solid and witty scenes and decent acts.
It is strange in such crime films from that time that an evildoer is rather presented as a victim of society. Once, however innocently, ended up in the circuit and saddled with a criminal record, it is virtually impossible to be reintegrated into normal society (prestige, work...) and there is only one way out...

Good film in which a criminal is sent to jail for the umpteenth time after a jewelery robbery. Although little new under the sun, a great plot for a film-noir like this. Victor Mature does well in the lead role, but it is Richard Widmark who stands out in his maniac debut role. A small 3.5 stars.

A New York noir this time. And it starts in the Chrysler building, so immediately a recognizable building. Even the prison scenes were filmed in Sing Sing, of all places. One with a solid dramatic underlay, similar to Clash By Night this month. Not too subtle maybe with the self-sacrifice at the end and Christian symbolism in the character names. And with a female voice over, you rarely hear that.
I found Mature to be very good and easily able to carry the film. I already knew that Widmark can play nasty people, but that started here. Last year I also saw a Hathaway that disappointed me slightly. This one was very nice though. With beautiful, somewhat long well-constructed scenes.
