One of my favorite movies with Bogart and also one of my favorite action movies. A movie that clearly serves as a model for many later movies within the action genre, the story must have been quite original in the 50s because I have not yet come across any movies that also show a hostage situation for the entire running time. Although of course many similar movies have been released after this movie (Hostage and A Perfect World are such examples), but those movies cannot compete with this action classic. Humphrey Bogart again plays the role of bad guy here, just like in Dark Passage and High Sierra, and does so very well, the same can be said about the well-cast supporting roles. By the way, I noticed that you can already see in the movie that Bogart was struggling with his health, which is not surprising because he died less than two years later.

There is simply nothing wrong with this film, the story was easy to watch and seemed less dated than some other 50s classics and there was enough suspense to be found.

Good thriller, with a good role by Bogart, the beginning with the humor in the family is a bit out of place in my opinion, but as soon as the hostage situation starts the film really gets going.

The description also says film noir, but I don't think that classification fits this film very well.

A beautifully filmed and exciting home invasion, in which three escaped prisoners take an average family hostage in their home. On the timeline a very late film noir, which was filmed in VistaVision, an earlier name for widescreen. And this is certainly a welcome extra, because the film often uses innovative camera angles for that time. The script is very playful, which means that something is constantly happening to keep the action going. For Humphrey Bogart this was his penultimate film role and he is also the one who makes the most impression as a heartless villain and "cop killer". A minus point, as is often the case for films from that time, are the female roles. In that time always models of obedience and submissiveness... Just annoying. Every time father Hilliard returns home, the women rush to the balcony to assess the state of affairs... But otherwise an absolutely rock-solid thriller in which I was more than once bitten by the exciting situations. Nice to see that it is also so highly praised on MM.
