Still a nice noir, this great source of inspiration for PTA's Inherent Vice.

The chemistry between Bogart and Bacall in particular is great here. In terms of acting, The Big Sleep is certainly good. The story is quite entertaining, but it does get a bit boring after a while. The film is just a bit too long to hold your attention for the full two hours. In addition, it is occasionally told unnecessarily complex to the viewer. Something this story didn't need at all. Despite those minor flaws, The Big Sleep has a high entertainment value and Bogart and the people he is chasing provide a very high body count and the film has a decent pace for the most part.

Very entertaining.

Excellent film in which a private detective takes on a job from a rich old man with two grown daughters. A pretty complicated plot that remains entertaining and yields a few tense moments towards the end. But what makes this film so good are the wonderful dialogues. Constant striker and perfectly fired by the cast. The second collaboration between Lauren Bacall and Humprey Bogart doesn't hurt the film either and the chemistry is visible.

Like many stories based on Chandler's books, it's all unnecessarily complicated, illogical and far-fetched, I really have no idea why the best man is so fancied. So why such a high rating for this film? Simple, Bogart and Bacall. The interaction between the 2 is great, but also separately they know how to grab and keep the attention. At some point I just dropped out of the plot (not because I couldn't follow anymore, but because I didn't want to follow anymore, didn't think it was worth putting the energy into it) and just enjoyed Bogey & Bacall and to a lesser extent, of course, the solid directing of Hawks.
