Never Take Sweets from a Stranger plot

"...and then he made us play that silly game..."

Nine-year-old Jean Carter is playing in the woods with her friend Lucille, two years her senior, when she discovers she has lost her purse that contained some cash for candy. Lucille tells her she knows where to get sweets for free and leads her to a large mansion whose owner, Clarence Olderberry, a tall, thin man of 70, has been watching the girls from his window. The night that follows, Jean cannot sleep and goes to tell her parents what she had to do for an old man to get free candies. Her parents immediately lodge a complaint, but the local police chief is skeptical of the young girl's account and also warns them that the Olderberry family has considerable status in the area.

Felix Aylmer is sublime in the role of child molester. He initially seems like a sweet old man, but later turns out to be a true monster. Very scary and convincingly played. The film reminded me somewhat of "Es geschah am helllicht Tag".

Excellent film in which a girl and her friend receive free sweets from an old man. Undoubtedly a quite progressive film for its time. How the entire community deals with the matter is well developed. The film has lost little of its power, despite the fact that some things still seem a bit outdated (such as the court scene). A strong, exciting finale.

A lesser-known Hammer production that focuses on the events in a real-life Canadian village in the late 1950s. For once, it's not about vampires or other living dead, but rather on a pedophile in the village. A very sensitive subject, and—perhaps to my surprise—it's presented in a very balanced yet raw way in this oldie. The film wasn't a box office success, partly due to Hammer's gothic reputation, which clashed with the expectations of its audience and some critics. It's a shame, because Hammer proved here that it could convincingly portray a sensitive subject in film. The acting is excellent, and the story is well-crafted. It is, and remains, a Hammer, and there are some chilling scenes—for its time. But they feel very appropriate.

Unexpectedly one of the best Hammers I've seen, although I have yet to see many more.
