"Are the men and women of Washington really like this?"
Robert Leffingwell is nominated by the President of the United States as the new Secretary of State. In the Senate, which has to decide on the nomination, supporters and opponents of the president play their power game. An old conservative senator corners the candidate with reference to his early communist sympathies. As the president's concerns grow, a devious attempt by supporters to save the nomination has dramatic consequences.
