Sahara plot

"Their dramatic story can now be told!"

After the fall of the Libyan city of Tobruk, veteran American sergeant Joe Gunn, Fred Clarkson and Jimmy Doyle drive their tank into the Sahara. En route they pick up six lost British allies and not long after the Sudanese Sergeant Major Tambul, with his Italian prisoner. Tambul leads the group to a lost fortress, where they finally hope to find water. A detachment of German soldiers arrives a little later at the fortress for water, but Gunn wants weapons for water. The Germans refuse and go on the attack. Gunn leads his men, now scarred by desert life, into a hopeless battle, hoping that Fred Clarkson will be able to reach the British in time for reinforcements.

Good film in which a group of stranded soldiers in the desert look for water. A fairly simple story, but certainly entertaining overall. Especially because the film actually becomes more and more exciting (especially when the group of soldiers has to compete against a larger group of Germans).

Impressive war film. Made in 1943 at a time when the world war was still in full swing, this is understandably a piece of American propaganda within the Hollywood formula. Nevertheless, in my opinion the film depicts the horror and absurdity of war events. It's clearly something you don't want to experience yourself. Allegedly, there are references to true events, as is also made clear in the intro to the film. But probably some things were enhanced to keep the morale of the American army and the Allies high.

Excellent acting, and Bogart who comes across convincingly in the role of commander. Good choice by the producers to allow the various nationalities to speak their own language, which contributes to the sense of reality. What is interesting about these types of films is the representation of the view of the war at the time of the war itself. Today one would not be able to make such a war film, on the one hand because the propaganda part (the end of the film) would be over, and on the other hand because people reflect on this today after a period of 70 years when the dust has long settled.

A war film, while the war was still in full swing. With a diverse cast, at least in terms of nationalities. The power lies in the different characters. The story reminded me of The Alamo and Seven Samurai, although it remains a war film. The whole thing isn't all that special, but fortunately it isn't bad either. It was noticeable that patriotism was somewhat lacking, although you could not ignore it towards the end. On the other hand, you can't entirely blame it in 1943.
