Considering Frank Capra's other films, this is a bit of an odd man out. Where, together with his favorite screenwriter Riskin, he usually presents his audience with a somewhat satirical picture of everyday life in a light-hearted manner, Capra here sketches a utopian world. As a result, this film is a lot more serious than the wonderful comedies that have made it so famous. I'm not entirely thrilled about that. I can understand the high rating because of the poignant message, but I don't share that appreciation. The film has too many shortcomings for that and is downright boring in the middle part.

With this film I was reminded of the comments of the film critic David Winnington on A matter of life and death by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, when he wrote about the serene sky shown in it that in fact " is a boundless Wembley stadium surrounded by tinkling music and mist, where all men in their right mind, if they were careless enough to get there, would immediately blaspheme themselves out of it." In other words, to go along with Lost horizon you clearly have to take off your cynical or ironic (or, some would say, just realistic) glasses. can i do that? I do – sometimes I just don't even remember if I still have those glasses somewhere. (And to be fair, Capra and Riskin are already building an alternative view of their own by making George Conway and Maria strive for an escape to the end.)

Apart from that, this is a technically extremely ambitious and for me a successful production on all fronts with fantastic sets and a remarkably high quality cast, especially in the roles of two of my most acclaimed supporting actors of classic Hollywood, Thomas Mitchell as the villainous Barnard and the double takes specialist Edward Everett Horton as paleontologist Lovey, I mean Alexander P. Lovett. I never experience the use of less quality film material and stills to be able to tell the whole story as a problem.

I've never seen the remake, but when I see the trailer on YouTube I'm really looking forward to it, that seems just like that the best musical since The sound of music. Oh, it turns out to have found those cynical glasses after all, they were next to Shangri-La of the Kinks...

This utopia - like story is about a mysterious country where aging hardly takes place , everyone lives in peace with each other , greed and hunger for power do not exist , it resembles a form of escapism .

People are simply not wired to bring about such a civilization .

Doesn't alter the fact that the film is well put together, but it is and remains a fairytale
