"Together for the first time!"

Millionaire daughter Ellie marries against her father Alexander Andrews's will. Learning this, Alexander immediately has the marriage annulled and puts the unruly Ellie under house arrest on his yacht in Miami. Ellie manages to escape her guards and flees by bus to New York. During the long bus ride, Ellie meets the fired journalist Peter Warne, who sees a good story in her and therefore protects her against the private detectives and police sent to her. They fall in love, but there's a hitch when Peter leaves Ellie to sell his story to the newspaper. Ellie thinks Peter will betray her hideout to her father in order to collect the $10,000 finder's fee. Ellie then decides to return to the parental home. But was that a good decision?

One of the crown jewels of master director Frank Capra. A great comedy with a simple story in itself, masterfully portrayed by the Hollywood monuments Clark Gable and the exceptionally talented and particularly lovely Claudette Colbert, based on Capra. The sharp dialogues and the chemistry between them are simply extraordinary.

I have owned this DVD for about 5 years now and every year during the Christmas holidays I treat myself to a new acquaintance with this film. I have to, because I don't believe that people are still able to make a comedy of this level. Never mind, because I thoroughly enjoy this every time.

Given the zeitgeist, this is probably the source of every romantic feature film. The story is simple, yet well fleshed out (despite many later romantic chick flicks). You feel the characters grow closer to each other every time they "argue". Because - as the cliché goes - to tease is to ask for love. Whether it's stealing place, calling it "spoiled nest", "wall of Jericho", etc. At the same time, the film is full of humorous note: the carrot (in hindsight that this was the source for bugs bunny and his talk), the hitchhiking, explaining how a man undresses, ... Perhaps the best thing about this film is this: apparently the 2 protagonists couldn't stand each other on the set and the film was made on a small budget in a "small studio" (Columbia). But after 80 years (!) there is absolutely nothing to notice; given the continuous chemistry hanging in the film.

Once again, top film from Capra!

“Any guy that'd fall in love with your daughter ought to have his head examined.”

“Now that's an evasion!”

Excellent classic. This is the forerunner of all romantic comedies, and it's still one of the best. It Happened One Night has a simple yet effective story, and the film doesn't need much to impress either. Just two actors with great chemistry, and a director who knows what he's doing. Frank Capra's directing is impressive, and Gable and Colbert are great together. The film is actually one long road trip, and it's great that it remains so interesting to watch. That's the magic of It Happened One Night.
