Story about a black family living together in a cramped house in Chicago. Mother is a strong, proud woman; her son an intelligent, hard-working man who becomes frustrated by the few opportunities society offers him. The youngest daughter is a student trying to find her cultural identity. When their forgotten husband and father die, the family is given $10,000 in insurance money, and they run into problems over what to do with the money.
