Pretty nice film about a group of boys who, during the last convulsions of the Third Reich, are ordered to defend a bridge. It is unknown to the boys that this bridge is completely unimportant and that this assignment is mainly intended to allow the boys to safely get through the last part of the war and that will remain so if their immediate supervisor is killed. ] Full of youthful hubris and forced heroism, they take on the completely unnecessary battle. The second half is quite impressive, but I didn't really think it was a top film. The first half was a bit too interesting for that, and the morale was a bit too high. Then, for example, All Quiet on the Western Front (different war, same theme and message) was a bit better. But certainly interesting to see.

Okay.

Well received but still fairly obscure war film in which a number of children play the leading role. This alone creates extra sentiment, but as is often the case with older films, the sentiment is a little too much on top of it. The latter remains a serious problem throughout the film.

On the other hand, a known problem is that the introduction of the characters does not really captivate. During the first half of the film, the war also remains a bit out of the picture. You know it takes place and now and then you see something like a tank driving through the streets, furthermore the film first builds the friendship between the men, but this is just not very interesting.

So it doesn't really help that the boys aren't the best actors, and few of the roles really know how to captivate. You don't sympathize very much, but it's not really annoying. It's just that the guys can't quite hold the viewer's attention, and that remains an ongoing problem throughout the film.

As soon as the war itself starts to appear, the film becomes impressive. It all looks good, especially for an older film. The explosions are palpable and the setting is strongly chosen. It is also equally exciting and always manages to captivate. That makes up for the film with its tough start and brings it to a satisfactory level as a whole.

The lighting and mood setting are also sometimes successful, too bad that the film can't always hold the attention. It takes a little too long and follows a little too familiar paths. I don't know whether it had been done before that time, but it seems to me that it has been made at that time for more than 60 years.

One of Hans Teeuwen's best bad jokes is that when it comes to war, people always talk about the Jews, but the Germans weren't sweethearts either.

It wasn't until 1959 that a German-produced film set on the German side of World War II gave a face and character to the people on that side of the front.

'Die Brücke' by Austrian director Bernhard Wicki does an excellent job of showing the total absurdity of war. A group of seven high school students inadvertently find themselves in combat situations while guarding a strategically unimportant bridge. It quickly becomes clear to them that the naive ideal of fighting for the fatherland leads to senseless violence and even death.

In one of the lead roles you can recognize the then seventeen-year-old Fritz Wepper, who later caused a furore as Harry “hol mal schon den Wagen” Klein in Derrick.
