I initially gave the film 4 stars, but I increased it by half because it continues to resonate.

Young Mr. Lincoln is Ford at its purest: a beautiful, authentic-feeling piece of 'Americana' about a true legend. Of course you can say that the main character is just a little too flawless: Abraham Lincoln is presented as a noble, intelligent farm boy with a golden heart and enormous verbal powers. But thanks to Fonda's incredible performance, he manages to make his character come across as convincingly human and down-to-earth. Moreover, Ford would do well to make this tribute about a personal triumph of Lincoln, rather than focusing on his later, large-scale political victories.

Instead of presenting it as a dry historical drama, Young Mr. Lincoln more of a kind of enchanting parable full of corny humor and nostalgic charm. Due to the relaxed atmosphere of the whole, the actions of the main character never seem too pompous or meaningful, even though they are in pure essence.

The film mainly consists of court and other mass scenes, but it is mainly in the more serene scenes that that typical 'Ford magic' emerges. I am thinking, for example, of the opening scene by the river, where Honest Abe learns his calling. . My favorite scene, however, is where he expresses his sincere love for the Clay family, immediately making a kind of social statement:

"You folks are just like my folks. I said that to myself the minute I laid eyes on you. My mother would feel right at home with you, Mrs. Clay. I know she would.

Sarah, I bet you didn't know I had a sister once, just about your age. Only, she died when her baby was born.

And I knew a girl like you Carrie Sue, named Anne. Anne died too.."

Moving monologue, unparalleled by Fonda in perhaps even his best role.

A court western about a young Lincoln. It mainly wants to portray Lincoln's justice: Honest Abe. To be honest, we're presented with a figure here that could just as easily be another character. Although Americans will look at this with more respect.

1939 was a strong film year with Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, Stagecoach, Mr. Smith goes to Washigton, Wuthering Heights and Ninotchka (Garbo Laughs!). Young Mr. Lincoln is not immediately mentioned in such a list, and is still not at the same level. Henry Fonda also played Frank James (brother of the better known Jesse James) that year, apparently a year of American historical figures. He does a good job, I don't really know what Lincoln would look like. But he does pull off the film. And in itself it has become a fascinating courtroom drama. Because actually it's not about Lincoln at all, but the lawsuit after a fight. But that's all it is.

Henry Fonda perfect as Lincoln. A film that chooses to highlight a number of character traits of the young Lincoln, which helped him on the way to his exceptional destiny. He cared about little people, he could talk well, felt at ease among people, had a strong sense of justice, approached everything in a rational way, and so on. Fonda gives an exceptional performance, and his facial features are also strongly reminiscent of the American president. The only disadvantage is that a large part of the film is about a murder case that is brought to court, so I felt that time was lost to tell other facts about Lincoln. Another beautiful classic.
