The Oklahoma of the 1930s is a dusty area, from which many dispossessed farmers migrate to California. After a stay in prison, Tom Joad returns to his home, only to find that his family has been evicted from their farm. He meets them at his uncle's farm and joins them as they travel to California in search of a new life.

The Grapes of Wrath is a beautiful film adaptation of the book of the same name by John Steinbeck. We are talking about the period just after the great stock market crash in 1929. In search of a better future, large hordes of families are looking for work, in this case California. People are lured with flyers with promises that can never be fulfilled for everyone. But everyone thinks they can have a job and secure their future and that for the family.
Impoverishment and poverty are cleverly depicted in the film and despite the heavy dejected theme, the film is somehow still filled with lightness. The hope for happiness and prosperity is great among many and is in stark contrast to reality. The often optimistic note, on the other hand, cannot always be reconciled with events. Ok, you don't necessarily have to be unhappy about poverty, but the death of the pater en mater familias is still a major event that was treated too little emotionally.
The grapes of wrath is an atmospheric film with beautiful landscapes. Henry Fonda is very charismatic and the other actors/actresses like Carradine and Darwell are also doing very well. The film pushes you face-to-face with reality. The American dream is far away, although philosophy always offers a way out. Maybe I should try the book after all.
