Le Quai des Brumes plot

"Tender... frankly adult. Filled with almost every emotion known to man"

Jean, a deserter, arrives in Le Havre and seeks shelter before leaving the country. Thanks to a sympathetic drifter, he finds shelter near the harbor where he meets a painter and a young lady, Nelly. A French classic from the golden age. Gabin and Morgan play a well-known film couple in a melancholic and fatalistic drama set in a port city. Yes, it was quite a bold move, those characters deviating from the norm (especially Michel Simon, who has a crush on Morgan), but they are characters who leave a strong impression, both through the acting and the dialogue.

Furthermore, Carné manages to inject dynamism into his film with varied settings that exude a great deal of atmosphere; definitely not a stuffy living room movie. It's always fascinating to watch such a film for the details: the clothes, the interiors, the cafes, etc. What life was like back then. A good film, but not a top-notch one for me.

This is indeed a textbook example of poetic realism. The lyricism of a happy period is inevitably followed by unhappiness, like a kind of fatalism. Jean Gabin is, as it were, the personification of this movement, which gained popularity in France in the 1930s.

I saw the film a second time because I might have missed something earlier, and although it's appreciated a bit more now, it's not really my cup of tea. It lacks a bit of spontaneity, in my opinion, and ultimately, I think Michel Simon's acting is by far the best.

The setting is quite successful and certainly conveys the atmosphere of poverty and the crisis years.

It's said that the film had trouble getting into theaters at the time and was even temporarily rejected for being "immoral, depressing, and harmful to young people." That was 80 years ago...

An intriguing film classic with beautiful lighting experiments, especially in the first half. The grim harbors and misty settings are skillfully captured by director Marcel Carné. The content, however, is somewhat less captivating, with characters who are sufficiently eccentric but offer few surprising additions. While it all culminates in a strong ending, the buildup, especially in the middle section, is not always captivating and is actually quite memorable.
