The large-scale events of the war are viewed through the eyes of two children. As millions die, you begin to feel sorry for that one dog. It is easier to sympathize on a small scale. It's great that they can make two child actors look so natural. That also depends on the installation. Brigitte Fossey is sometimes shown in close-up in a reaction. She only got to see the bombing afterwards. The arbitrariness is demonstrated: she happens to be the one who survives. Farm life is not idealized. Neighbor quarrels, hypocrisy and minor forms of child abuse were part of life. Narciso Yepes plays the anonymous Romanza, sometimes beaten to death by novice guitarists, but here brought very atmospheric.

A successful multi-layered war film with fantastic acting by the very young leading roles. After a heartbreaking beginning, the story unfolds around two quarrelsome farming families in an equally torn France. Of course you get to see an image of a countryside that belongs to a bygone era. But that doesn't matter. It serves as a backdrop to display the pettiness of man. To the point of the absurd, because some moments in the film have more to do with black comedy than with drama. And that is then placed against the sincerity of the children's world. A very pure work by Rene Clement. Cheers.

Nice sweet little film that leaves enough impression. It is precisely that the film remains so small that gives it its strength, with a very strong focus on the survival and life in the war of ordinary citizens, and more specifically for children. And it is precisely the countryside that is refreshing, since the feeling of war is there, but daily life can also go on quite well and the war can be further away. That gives an interesting dimension. I can't say much bad about this, but the film does miss real highlights and occasionally the film drags a bit. But definitely a high score. 4.0*.
