A well-constructed, atmospheric, and suspenseful film. Powerful dialogue, with a social slant that was certainly appreciated at the time, and excellent actors, most of whom deserve praise from Louis Jouvet. The included chansons and music will also have contributed to the film's popularity with the French public.

As for the actors: Established value Juvet (I'll never forget his "bizarre, bizarre" from "Drôle de Drame") and Bernard Blier, just at the start of his eventful career, make an impression, as do, of course, the charming Suzy Delair and the supporting actor par excellence Robert Dalban.

Good work.

This is the fourth Clouzot I've currently finished, and it hasn't disappointed me yet. A solid plot and excellent performances, presented with beautiful, shadowy photography that perfectly reflects the film noir of the era. After "The Assassin Habited at 21," this was Clouzot's second film adaptation of a crime novel by the Belgian (Walloon) author Stanislas-André Steeman. This author is considerably less well-known outside Belgium than the legendary crime writer George Simenon (Maigret), but they nevertheless seem to be working from the same vein; they were also contemporaries, resulting in, among other things, this French classic.

This is my fourth Clouzot film, and the first three had all earned solid 4* ratings, with Les Diaboliques being my favorite. It was time to explore more of his oeuvre.

This Quai des Orfèvres doesn't quite reach the level of his other films I've seen, but it's still a very solid film. Clouzot, especially in terms of atmosphere, once again delivers a strong performance. Not that I have much of a thing for French chansons, but all the peripheral activities surrounding the theater, the catchy chansons... it does give the film a certain charm.

The plot itself is fairly standard, but Clouzot develops it quite nicely. With Les Diaboliques, I already felt like I was watching a Hitchcock, and here too, there are moments here and there that you might find in a Hitchcock film. The moment where the inspector uses the sheet with Brignon's address as a lighter is a wonderful one, but the scene where Maurice tries to use his presence at the theater as an alibi is equally thrilling.

We also see a top-notch cast, with Louis Jouvet standing out as the inspector who closely follows the suspects. Another good film from Clouzot.

3.5*
