Shadows on the Sage plot

'The Three Mesquiteers', consisting of 'Tucson' Smith, 'Stony' Brooke and 'Lullaby' Joslin, arrive to assist Sheriff Lippy in his fight against a gang that is committing thefts at the Jackson mining company. Curly Joe, the leader of the gang, captures Tucson and finds himself very much like him. Curly takes on Tucson's identity and joins Stony and Lullaby. In the night, Curly steals money from Jackson's safe, gets caught, and shoots Jackson while fleeing. Stony and Lullaby are horrified to learn from Jackson that Tucson may have been the thief and gunman. A mob has gathered outside to lynch Stony and Lullaby.
