Nice post-apocalyptic movie. Where the first Mad Max seemed to take place regularly in a more normal world, in this part we only see the desolate desert and the endless roads that run through it. A big plus, because this setting is much stronger and fits in well with the hopeless society we see here (their dreamland is based on a few old holiday maps, which says enough about reality).
While watching I continued to be amazed at the detail of this world that has been created. From the costumes, to the vehicles and the weapons. You can see that everything has been thought through to create a picture that is as credible as possible.

The downside is the acting. Gibson plays the part of Max as he should be, rude, curt and cool. But it also makes you feel less compassion for him. The funny sidekick makes for some welcome communication. The rest of the acting is often quite over the top, and although this doesn't bother the biker gang, I don't think it contributes to credibility with the camp residents. This made life difficult at times.

The film ends with a spectacular chase, which is still exciting by today's standards. In any case, old school chases are often more believable in my opinion, because you feel that there is no messing around with CGI. Wonderful ending to this special film!

3.5*

A big step up from the first movie and also the movie most people think of when they think of Mad Max. Speeding around the desert, being chased by weirdos in even weirder vehicles and a main character who travels through this world as a cynical loner. Mad Max 2 probably contains the most iconic moments from the series, although George Miller with Fury Road did this film quite nicely and improved certain things - especially technically. Because to be honest, speeding up the image during the chases (which happened a lot more in the first Mad Max) remains clumsy. It's Mad Max, not Benny Hill. Still, the action in Mad Max 2 is very creative and at times very spectacular.

Mad Max 2 also contains very nice types, both on the side of the good guys and on the side of the bad guys. These villains are led by Lord Humungus, who is best described as Jason Voorhees who has joined the Cenobites. What's also funny is how eloquent this best man actually is (besides the fact that his voice doesn't sound threatening at all, but rather resembles the voice of smoker Joke from Lingo). But hey, it's a nice eccentric club. Fortunately, the camp of the good guys this time also features some memorable characters, such as the caveman kid with deadly boomerang or Bruce Spence. He forms a fun team with Max and dog Dog. The moment the dog holds Spence at gunpoint in the car is and remains a beautiful image.

3.5 stars.

I like this movie much better than the first part.

Here you get the idea that there is no longer an 'ordinary' world. That everyone who is still alive is trying to survive on water and petrol/oil.

The spectacular chases are beautifully shot and without any CGI at the time.

The film is from 1981, but if you were to see it in theaters now, it would be no less than action films from this time.

I find the wink to tough men funny, but also a bit homoerotic. Lots of leather pants and naked butts and briefs with iron pins on them. The characters could have stepped straight out of a hardcore porn movie. Mel Gibson also looks tough and good. The film is never boring.
