The biggest problem is the tone of the film.

Wanting to connect with the first part, but completely ignoring what made the original so effective. Instead of the stalking Myers who, panting in his mask, observes his victims before striking, here he is reduced to a clumsy elderly person who strikes from around the corner. No build-up, no tension but an 'ordinary' masked maniac. For a single moment, reflected in a living room window, you still feel the potential of the threat, but nowhere is it effectively worked out.

The fact that scream queen Curtis is also staged as a very elderly person detracts, however combative and paranoid her words may sound. She happens to be right that Myers is looking for her, but that 40 years later she is still so obsessed with his return (has converted her home into an armed bunker on high alert), is far beyond the psychiatric.

The new family involved is far from interesting. Every bit of dialogue wasted on it is one line too many. The oddly added dash of humor is totally misplaced. Not to mention the incompetent journalists. But the worst part is that Myers is robbed of the very thing that made him so dangerous in the first part: unpredictable, wait-and-see threat. Disappointing addition to the series. 2*

Actually a nice reboot of the franchise. I've now seen all the parts other than Rob Zombie's. And while this movie isn't as good as the original, I think it's the 4th best movie of the series. Halloween 1, maybe just number 2 and 4 are better in my memory. This recent Halloween does a lot of good like the scares. I wasn't shocked at all but I thought they did their best. They do not come too fast and are well accompanied by sound.
Jamie Lee Curtis returns for the umpteenth time (despite she died in Resurrection?). She's been preparing to kill Michael all these years. This brings us to the weakest part of the film. The stupid choices she makes when Michael arrives at her house, wow. Did you train for that for 40 years? All in all it works out and Michael is set on fire again. I would think he's really done by now.

But I'm glad we're going to get 2 new movies again. It's an icon and this director has certainly earned the benefit of the doubt. Since film 4, this has been closest to the original, which of course remains the best film.
