They Shall Not Grow Old plot

One hundred years after the First World War, much is known about the horrific impact it had on the soldiers, especially the scale of the casualties, wiping out a future generation. With 'They Shall Not Grow Old' Peter Jackson provides a new insight into the human experience of life at the front. Old images from war museum archives have been digitally edited and colored, giving one the eerie feeling that the images were recently recorded.

When I saw the movie title "They Shall Not Grow Old", I immediately thought of the song "...For Victory[/ url]" by death metal band Bolt Thrower, in which this sentence also occurs (after about 4 minutes) and this sentence is of course taken from the poem "[url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ode_of_Remembrance]Ode of Remembrance" from 1914.

This Documentary / Historical film is indeed a bit on the long side, but the whole is beautifully filmed, in which, among other things, hundred-year-old images have been colored with new digital techniques (from the 25th minute). The film features commentary by veterans of the 1970s and 1980s, which is sometimes quite impressive, even though you only hear their voices.

That this film is directed by Peter Jackson (of course best known for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy) is of course quite special (he was asked for that by the "Imperial War Museum") and the goal of Peter Jackson with this film is , to pull the men of the past and give them a human face so that a contemporary audience can reacquaint themselves with them and, frankly, he's succeeded quite well.

Impressive how with this old material they manage to create the impression that you are in the middle of it again by means of color.

The soldiers' interviews were also very interesting and a much better "voiceover" than an average voice actor.

Also a nice find to provide certain images with sound and voices, it was so well done that I almost assumed they were the real voices at first.

As far as I'm concerned, it could have lasted a little longer, because as someone who doesn't know much about the First World War, it was extremely interesting to watch on the big white screen.

4*

I was a little disappointed to be honest. I expected too much from it. What remains is the madness of the war. The joy of the war, as if it were a football match. Then the horrors of the trenches and once home to be looked at with the neck because no one has a picture of the horror of the war. So impressive, but the images came to life for me less than I expected.
