Leigh Whannell gives us a glimpse into the near future with Upgrade. That future seems very realistic to me. For example, there are 3D-printed pizzas (I recently read that lettuce was printed for the first time, although with a lot less plant cells than the natural lettuce, but still, it's coming). Also the self-driving cars, which will therefore be electronic and can possibly be hacked. For the most part, however, the film is about an implanted AI called STEM.

Upgrade is a genre mix of drama, action, horror and sci-fi. All this is combined quite smoothly, the different elements are nicely balanced. It doesn't feel like anything. Maybe the pace could have been a little faster for me at times.

Logan Marshall-Green is very similar to Tom Hardy, but I don't think it should be inferior. Very good actor that I have already seen in Quarry. I really liked the action, although I thought it was enough because I think you've seen it after a while. The plot twist is clever and comes across as a bit of a mind fuck. The ending came exactly when I said it and then you know the movie ended at the perfect moment.

Pretty okay.

Although Whannell lacks a bit of intrinsic talent to deliver a brilliant film, I have the feeling. On paper everything seems to be there for a dark sci-fi/cyberpunk piece, but the atmosphere is never quite right.

What works best is the soundtrack, which is quite heavy and effective. Visually it is also okay, although it lacks some good shots. The lighting is fine, camera work is also good, but it never gets really impressive. It's all just a bit too good and too familiar for that.

Action scenes are also a bit disappointing. Marshall-Green also acts a bit rude when his body is taken over, which makes the action scenes look rather ridiculous at times. I understand that it has a function, otherwise it just doesn't look right. Could easily have been better.

And the story borrows everywhere, although it reminded me most of a somewhat more linear and Americanized version of Oshii's Ghost in the Shell. But the link to Cronenberg, Robocop and a few other films/directors is also easy to make. What you yourself are probably most familiar with, it just isn't very original.

All in all, it lacks that layer of varnish on almost every level to really shine, but it never really disappoints either. It's just a solid film, dark and gritty enough, but a bit too neat within the genre to be a real masterpiece.

3.5*

The film may not be based on a very special, original idea but has a lot of energy on a combination of sci-fi, action, humor and revenge and is always exciting and entertaining. And the idea is well fleshed out with a few more twists in the story. Plus the theme is interesting: to what extent will we with the new technologies - cyborgs (human-machine); virtual reality - hand over control of our body and life to machines/computers? All in all, a wonderful movie.
