Part 5.

I saw this movie yesterday, but now I'm having a hard time recalling it again. It doesn't exactly make the parts more memorable. So I really have to write this review now, because otherwise I'll completely forget about the film and I can start over.

Part 5 follows the slasher formula a little more bravely. Where previous parts with Myers mainly emphasize subtle and slow construction, this part is a bit more straightforward. Myers no longer stabs his victims mainly in the final phase, but now also throughout the film, which speeds up the pace.

The kills are now also a bit harder, but Myers has really become a standard appearance here. The further the series progressed, the less special his figure became. Here too it has become little more than a strong and clumsy killer. The subtle is as good as gone and that unfortunately makes it less scary in a lot of ways.

Harris is still doing very well, but the writing in general hasn't improved. The parts are now really moving towards the supernatural by throwing in concepts such as a telepathic link. Although it does not claim a very central role, it does make the film more ridiculous so that you can no longer take it seriously as a slightly realistic slasher.

The film is a bit fuller, but the tension is almost completely gone and the Halloween atmosphere is no longer very present. A true slasher, then. Such a shame, because everything that was special about the series is now a bit watered down. It's still entertaining in a way, and the tempo is a bit higher, but in general a step less. Still, I prefer it to part 3. And the kids play out a lot of the older crew members.

Well, this was, umm. Particularly bad. And this is coming from someone who could still appreciate part IV for what it was. There is no build-up of tension, the script is snags together (the film feels really fragmentary, some characters and scenes are suddenly forgotten at random), acting performances are below average (and that's actually an understatement, because what is even someone acting? like Donald Pleasence here so bad), and the kills are largely tame and uninspired. It's really striking how little blood and gore there is here. Not that it's necessary per se, but it's very bland and well-behaved this way, and just plain boring. In terms of suspense (and every other facet), Halloween is the absolute king of the horror genre and thus of the series, and Halloween II was a bit more bloody and had some more inventive kills. The further sequels have neither one nor the other.

That telepathic stuff and that man in black aren't good either, but it's cool, because at least something else is being tried. But this is really a total mistake.

We've already reached part 5 during the review and it's more of the same. A nonsensical plot is devised around Jamie and that actually distracts too much from what it would be about. I'm actually looking forward to the H20 and Resurrection more now because they ignore these storylines.
The film also takes itself too seriously for a slasher movie. That in itself is not bad, but because you have child vs Myers it all remains a bit tame. Which is a shame, because Myers remains a bad ass and it's wonderful how cold-blooded and unscrupulous he is. But then towards the end it's a shame how they completely go wrong by letting him take off his mask. A small blemish on an otherwise icy killer in the series. The tension is unfortunately hard to find, but we'll see how this ends. Since this is pretty much the first movie where the ending is so obviously open to a sequel with probably a religious idiot or a cult member. I don't remember, but in this film you see a few times someone with dark clothes and a tattoo. We'll see in part 5.

2.5* remains standing
