For John Carpenter, the original Halloween from 1978 was a complete story, there was no need for a sequel. Money eventually got him involved in Halloween II. Then there was the idea to release a standalone movie every year from Halloween 3, under the name Halloween. But this did not sit well with Michael Myers fans and the film flopped. And is still seen by many as one of the worst parts of the series. From then on, Carpenter had nothing to do with the franchise.

Looking back at Halloween III: Season of the Witch, you really wonder if the movie would have been treated that way if it wasn't titled Halloween. Season of the Witch is a very memorable and cool horror. The premise is nice and simple, in which an awesome Tom Atkins with an awesome mustache goes in search of the maker of masks, played nicely evil by Dan O'Herlihy. The film is full of memorable moments such as the horrific scene in which a mask is tested with that family, the threat of the mysterious robots, the fight with robot-Ellie, the very strong ending ("Stop it!") and of course that perfect (and very annoying) commercial song by Silver Shamrock. The film doesn't feel like a Halloween at all, but in terms of atmosphere and soundtrack it is very reminiscent of other Carpenter films.

Despite Michael Myers becoming an icon, with movies like Halloween III: Season of the Witch, you still wonder if it wouldn't have been nicer to get a movie like this every year. Because after the first Halloween (and by the way, the first sequel was pretty nice) not much memorable came out of the franchise. The curse of the man in black, the kung-fu moves of Busta Rhymes or the lousy efforts of Rob Zombie would have saved us all.

3.5 stars.

If we hadn't all been so stupid, John Carpenter would have made us a great Halloween movie every year. But no, Michael Meyers is not in boohoo!!! As a thank you, let's make Halloween 3 a big flop.

Well you got your part 4, 5, 6, H20 and so on. I'd rather have a great movie like this every year. Okay Carpenter didn't direct it himself, but of course this is purely a John Carpenter movie. Because of the great soundtrack, the amazing story, the fantastic ending.

Yes I really like this movie, maybe even more than the original Halloween.

Four days until Halloween, Halloween, Halloween.

After Halloween II, writers John Carpenter and Debra Hill only wanted to write a screenplay that would highlight the Halloween theme, but would otherwise have no connection with the previous films. That wish was granted by the studio and that is how Halloween III: Season of the Witch was born. A film that has nothing to do with the serial killer Michael Myers anymore. The intention of the writing duo was to deliver a film every year on the theme of Halloween. Because Season of the Witch flopped enormously, that plan never got off the ground.

The titular reference to the two predecessors may not have been very clever. After all, such a title creates expectations that are not fulfilled. The film is completely separate from the figure Michael Myers and develops its own 'fresh' course. The story is even close to the science fiction genre. If you can see the film separately from the Michael Myers saga, the film is still not a masterpiece, but it is possible to appreciate the dark atmosphere, the good splatter effects and the cool supported synthesizer sounds.

They are the most impressive elements of the film. But even those excessive elements do not create a nice, exciting layer. The story is pretty silly. The characters are flat and wooden. A satisfactory apotheosis is lacking. It's best to think of Halloween III as an early playful representative of the splatter genre. It is not a good film, but as a wonderful document of time, the film is still somewhat entertaining with a lot of good will.
