In American Fiction is Thelonious "Monk" Ellison gespeeld door Jeffrey Wright, een schrijver en literatuurprofessor die worstelt met de verwachtingen van de literaire industrie ten aanzien van Afro-Amerikaanse auteurs. Zijn bijnaam "Monk" verwijst naar Thelonious Monk, de jazzmusicus die zijn eigen weg volgde en zich niet liet beperken door conventies.
Daarnaast gebruikt het personage Monk in de film het pseudoniem "Stagg R. Leigh" bij het schrijven van een 'zwart' boek. Deze naam is een verwijzing naar de zwarte souteneur/moordenaar Stagger Lee , een historisch figuur.
Deze tweedeling wordt tevens gepersonifieerd in Monk, en zijn broer Cliff (Sterling K. Brown) die in tegenstelling tot Monk niet alleen een diepzwarte huidskleur heeft maar zich ook stereotiep zwart gedraagt.
Monk wordt mooi ingetogen geacteerd door Jeffrey Wright. American fiction is een prettige kijkervaring met een creatieve tot leven geroepen dialoogscene. Het slot van de film comprimeert het thema tot een krachtige uitsmijter: de entertainmentindustrie geeft u wat u graag wilt hebben. Gewoon, omdat het geld oplevert.
