Just read through all (currently) 81 previous posts, and now I'm dizzy with all the pros and cons mentioned. It is remarkable how little the name of Laurence Harvey is mentioned, while firstly playing the title character, secondly getting about as much screen time as (if not more than) star and producer Frank Sinatra, and third, has the toughest role of anyone, bouncing back and forth between zombie (during the brainwashing sessions), touchy (during his day-to-day activities), under-tuck (with his mother), and obsessive (during his preparations for his final deeds) , and personally I think he does it quite brilliantly. In addition to Sinatra, Angela Lansbury (because of her also rock-solid role) and Janet Leigh (perhaps mainly because of the unclear function of her role and her bizarre dialogue on the train) get a lot of attention, but I think that the classic status of this film also gets a lot of attention. to Harvey's excellent playing.

Thrilling thriller and sharp satire. The plot is perhaps a little unbelievable, but that hardly bothers. Beautifully portrayed and well acted. Film that feels painfully topical again with the Trump campaign.

During the Cold War, fear of the communist threat caused conspiracy and espionage stories to spring up like mushrooms. Many of these stories have in common that they put your intelligence to the test. This is also the case in this film, in which the enemy has developed a very far-fetched method to manipulate people, in this case former Korean fighters. That lack of credibility bothered me throughout the film, even more so with this review than on my first viewing a long time ago.

That does not alter the fact that John Frankenheimer has put together an exciting spy thriller with Frank Sintra and Laurence Harvey in the lead roles, which in itself is not much to criticize. Yet…
