The Apprentice plot

Just saw it at Pathé Festival in Eindhoven. A classic biopic in the best sense of the word. Perfect build-up, Oscar-worthy performance by Stan and a very unique visual presentation (a kind of mockumentary style with 80 vahs band quality). It manages to be unintentionally funny without losing emotional punch. It hits like a bomb and portrays Donald Trump positively and negatively, but above all shows how this is a figure who is a victim of his own ambition. A top 10 film of this year.

You can wonder how accurate it all is but that goes for almost all biotopics. As a film very good and Sebastian Stan looks more and more like Trump as the film progresses. Very well done for someone who looks nothing like him.

Opportunistic biographical drama about the formative years of Donald Trump was released just weeks before the American presidential election. A clever marketing ploy for a remarkably dull reconstruction of the relationship that Donald Trump [Sebastian Stan] built in the 1970s with the shrewd, notorious lawyer Roy Cohn [Jeremy Strong]. Cohn uses his dirty bag of tricks to ensure that Trump receives a tax exemption of millions for his announced projects in New York. Donald's difficult relationship with his father [Martin Donovan] and mother [Catherine McNally] is touched upon, as well as Donald's tragic brother Freddy [Charlie Carrick] and his marriage to model Ivana Trump [Maria Bakalova]. Trump is surprisingly likeable at first, but once he has learned Cohn's lessons, he grows into a manipulative, egocentric, ruthless businessman. Gabriel Sherman's screenplay would have done better to focus entirely on the relationship between mentor Cohn and ward Trump, even though it remains difficult to sympathize with two such despicable characters.
