"Your luck just ran out."

Childish wisdom says that if you catch a leprechaun, you are entitled to his pot filled with gold. Dan O'Grady got to experience this, but didn't know that the leprechaun would do anything to get the gold back. However, he manages to lock up the devilish gnome in the basement of his house. Years later, when JD Reding and his daughter Tory move into the house and hire three boys to paint the place, the gnome manages to escape. And he is furious.

Give the Leprechaun his gold and give me my money back. What a waste of a movie. I expected the acting up to that point. I saw enough ingredients for an entertaining semi-horror piece like Troll, but there was just nothing to laugh about here. The leprechaun is terribly annoying with its limited vocabulary. In any case, this bastard looks more like an annoying little fellow than a dangerous opponent. It's just more like a failed Gremlins clone, just not funny, not scary or gross. It all started to get on my nerves very quickly. Other than that, I haven't seen anything original in this misfire. The sequels have been removed from the watch list.

Yes, the so-called "Three Guys Who Paint" characterizations are crappy, and Jennifer Aniston (a year before her breakout on the sitcom "Friends") is stuck with an annoying character and broken jokes. The direction is often downright clumsy and the continuity also leaves much to be desired. But Warwick Davis' makeup, dress, timing and intonation are spot-on and make the Leprechaun a delightfully villainous villain. The story - in which a Leprechaun goes over corpses to get that one coin back from his pocket of gold - is amusing and there are some genius finds: The Leprechaun's obsession for (clean) shoes and his various modes of transport yield some truly hilarious moments on. You will not find them much more volatile.

Bad.

Only David himself knows how to help Leprechaun up a bit. With only 23 years he is doing quite nicely here and knows how to get a lot out of his character. We also see a young Aniston again, but this is clearly not her best role. She does look nice though.

In the first minutes I thought I saw a nice and fresh horror comedy with fantasy influences, but they quickly turned out to be gone. After those minutes we get to see a pretty standard horror film that clearly didn't have a lot of budget to spend but still seems to try it somewhere.

Unfortunately, trying doesn't work right away, and Leprechaun knows how to prove it. There are few memorable parts in this film, and the scenes that are really fun can only be counted on one hand. Davis does a nice job and can throw a lot of one-liners, but in the end it's not exactly a scary threat.

The murders are very scarce, which I didn't really expect. The gore may sometimes triumph, but these moments are also very rare. It's remarkably bloody here and there, but I really miss some creativity and inspiration, especially beef cattle. For example, the carnage count only consists of 4 people.

Furthermore, the film is regularly quite cheesy and that is not a compliment, rather an insult. It all looks rather clunky and perhaps thinks just a little too much outside its budget. The slow course of the story and annoying characters make for a laborious 92 minutes. A few small experiments with practical effects can no longer save this.

Bad film, few beef cattle and annoying characters. Davis does a nice job, but just isn't a very exciting threat to face. I miss some playfulness and creativity in the settings and murders, which are essential with concepts like this. So points for Davis, a nice start and some nice practical effects, but that's about it.
