Fine, yes.

You wouldn't give a dime for it in advance, especially since the series has been really ungrounded for years. It's a small miracle that they even want to keep this alive, probably because it's a rights story (like Hellraiser?). In any case, I wasn't really waiting for yet another sequel.

Except that Kostanski was not a bad match for this film on paper. He already showed that he has an affinity with the older horror work and that obviously comes in handy here. But the nice thing is that this film does not get stuck in the whole 80s/90s thing while it still retains a certain old-fashioned charm.

It's a bit dirtier than you might expect, but ultimately this is also a comedy. It's not scary anywhere, it's not serious anywhere, it's often explicitly funny. And Kostanski does that just fine. A bit gore, a bit silly with putting away shoes, a bit of a laugh with current sensitivities. It's not great or fantastic, but it's definitely entertaining and, despite obvious limitations, it's just nicely put together.

Kostanski was clearly looking forward to it, if they can maintain this level they can certainly score another one.

3.0*

I liked the 1993 Leprechaun a lot better, and this one was a bit disappointing. With a lot of scenes

Of course, again in pitch darkness, so there is visually significantly less to experience anyway.

I also quickly find that in B-level horror films (which this one definitely was for me)

questionable. A cover-up of (creative) poverty, and we're just messing around. The

leprechaun itself was pretty cool, although of course it hardly deviated from the original. That plays

of course also against, when you have seen that nasty, cruelly cheerful character before. I

had especially hoped for more, with today's film technology possibilities

visual flair and some inventive, fun kills by that little guy. But none of it. Alas!

Fine review. A film where a director like Steven Kostanski is clearly in the right place, since the general expectations will be low and the influences are clearly within the area of interest of the best gentleman. Leprechaun Returns does not take itself too seriously for a moment and especially does not hold back when it comes to the murders themselves. The acting is also not bad, with Linden Porco in particular coming across nicely as the evil Irishman. The humor also knows how to catch on and the film has an infectious pace that maintains the entire duration. In many respects it could have been a bit more energetic and the content is of course completely interchangeable, but the makers clearly have fun with the material and that results in an amusing genre film.
