"Scream now, while there's still room to breathe!"

Meg and Paul's first date ends badly when Paul hits an old bum. The man has a lot of pain in his hand, with some kind of green poison sticking to it. He claims the stuff fell from the sky. Meg, Paul and Brian Flagg, who witnessed the accident, rush the man to the hospital. The thing on the man's hand gets bigger and bigger and eats his whole body. That same night, six people are killed by the same blubber.

Immediately after A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, Chuck Russell and Frank Darabont worked on the remake of The Blob, a 1950s film starring Steve McQueen. And with these two at the helm, that means a lot of gore and above all a lot of fun. Because that's The Blob, a whole lot of fun. The film seems to combine the best of the 50's and 80's eras, resulting in a hilarious and sometimes erroneous horror, where boredom is never a second. Characters aren't exactly engaging, but the cast is likeable. The script is not very strong, but fortunately there is a lot of play with the clichés and rules of the genre, so that there are still plenty of surprises for the seasoned horror fan. And meanwhile, the effects are still quite high. And even if it gets a little too clumsy or clunky, it actually only makes this movie more charming.

4 stars.

Funny video.

It's simply amazing that such an oil-dominant project managed to get a budget of no less than 19 million in 1988. That's ridiculously high for a film like this one, but the film manages to fill itself up nicely and use its budget well.

The Blob is therefore a typical example of a guilty pleasure film. A film that makes absolutely no sense, has stupid characters and a ridiculous concept but is very fun. The Blob actually gets its charm entirely from its special effects, mainly from that big slime ball.

Acting isn't too good. The characters walking around are pretty standard with a few weirdos in between. In any case, the teenagers are just about interesting enough to fill a playing time, things only go wrong when the scientists appear after 50 minutes.

Everything that comes before that is pretty fun. The film sometimes comes out remarkably gross with some great murders. The story is captivating and the city is attractively decorated. It completely feels like a bad 80s horror movie and I like that. In addition, the blob also looks really great.

After that, that is, after 50 minutes, things kind of slow down because it all gets a little duller when the scientists come around the corner. It goes a bit too much like a standard teen vs the world movie and that comes at the expense of charm and pace. It's a shame because the movie was nice on the way. In the bombastic finale, however, the film makes a comeback.

Playing time is not a minute too long or too short and apart from the mediocre half hour after minute 50, it is a very smooth binocular. Too bad I saw the movie a little too late. I really enjoyed the slimy special effects and the delicious finale. Good entertainment from the 80s. A budget horror movie.
