Hellraiser: Bloodline plot

"The past, the present and the future will all meet at the crossroads of hell!"

It's 2127. Pinhead, the vicious cenobite, is aboard a space station controlled by Dr. Merchant. Merchant's mission is to close the gates to hell once and for all, as his eighteenth century ancestor was responsible for creating the puzzle box that first opened those same gates to hell. Many generations have since tried in vain to stop Pinhead, but now it seems that Merchant has invented something to succeed in his mission.

This was a creditable attempt at expanding the Hellraiser universe a bit and giving it some sort of expanded origin.

Because the film is set in three different time periods, it at least became a lot less boring quickly, although the film doesn't manage to get off to a good start and it ends with a bit of a sizzle.

The gore is a bit on the tame side, at least the 81 minute version I've seen. Above is 85 so I think I saw a cut version after all; There were definitely gory parts in the film, but I think that was cut around a bit too often. The new twinsCenobite is a nice creation, by the way, and the demonic dog was also nicely designed.

Acting performances are quite decent for a film of this nature. Doug Bradley is of course head and shoulders above the rest, but the rest of the cast is also adequate. The space marines are the least developed characters and ultimately serve mainly as toys for the Cenobites. The movie was supposed to end with a bang, but the space station part didn't really pay attention to me anymore.

Even for a film of only 85 minutes it was a bit too long-winded, but this film could have been a decent closing, had it not been for the fact that Pinhead is such a franchise cannon that we are now stuck with a new, chubby Pinhead .

The downward spiral has started, I fear. Bloodline does try to add a few things to the big picture, of course, but simply doesn't succeed. I've never wondered where the cube came from, but I find this explanation quite flimsy. The choice to process three storylines in the story (in an 80-minute film) is also not the best choice. The tension and gore have had to make way for a lot of explanation and that makes Bloodline quite boring. Too many new things are being dragged in and in my eyes the makers ignore what Hellraiser stands for. Pinhead in space? Writers without inspiration.

I've been (re)watching Hellraisers for a week now, and this part four is enough for me. Part 3 wasn't all that great, it hits about the same level but in a different way. On a positive note, it was nice to learn a bit about the background of the, erm, Hellraiser universe, with a little story about the original creator of the Lament Configuration. I do, however, continue to find the Pinhead from parts 1 and 2 so much cooler than the cliche demon that is discussed here in 3 and 4, but that aside. The pace is also quite nice, since these are really three stories in one: a pretty entertaining origin story, a reasonable but not very inspired piece in the present, and a part in a future spaceship that I didn't need.

Jumping in time doesn't make it any more coherent. And despite the new settings in the past and future, it still comes across as a somewhat chewed-up story. Again the same pinhead without depth and with the same soft talk about pain, again the same kind of kills with meat hooks, and again a few uninteresting cenobites that are pulled by their hair. And when I read the comments above it's only downhill after this - I believe it for now with those Hellraisers.
