“I don't wanna scare anyone, but I'm gonna give it to you straight about Jason. His body was never recovered from the lake after he drowned. And if you listen to the old-timers in town, they'll tell you he's still out there...”

Entertaining. Friday the 13th Part 2 has the same structure and plot developments as the first part, but we do get to know Jason here. The youngsters are again slaughtered one by one, and it is all very amusingly portrayed again. It sometimes looks a bit amateurish, but that is also the charm of the Friday the 13th films. Just like the lousy acting. In the end it's about the simple but effective story, Jason, stupid and naive youngsters, entertaining killings and of course the score. And in that respect, this second film lives up to all expectations.

Also in this second part, Jason goes wild again on teenagers who are having fun in a summer camp. What a lovely setting that is. A camp full of exuberant teenagers who adhere to the libertine doctrine far away from everyday reality. Also nice for Jason who can hunt unhindered in the remote camp and thus successfully continue the simple but very entertaining concept of Friday the 13th.

A story without frills. Jason is the killer who slaughters the teenagers with no apparent pleasure and only guided by his instincts. Jason the beast. Other than an unhealthy attachment to his dead mother, he seems incapable of human interaction. A burlap sack over his head even deprives the viewer of his facial features. Jason is stripped of human traits. He is far from the human species. Jason is an inhumane monster. Jason is scary.

The cheerful teenagers serve as cattle for slaughter. Jolly pawns with which the viewer does not build a bond. He can enjoy himself with enjoyable kills without being distracted by any form of empathy. Jason hunts without much tact and with brute force. Jason is a dark menace. A rough staging and a stirring score provide the hunt with an extra raw sensation. The kills are central. The fate of the teenagers doesn't really matter. Anyway, it left me indifferent.

Part 2 is one of the highlights of the franchise, which, unlike Jason's later trips to Manhattan or to space, is just plain basic and anything but trashy. Part 2 is a wonderfully simple and atmospheric slasher. The film has a scary killer in Jason and offers pleasantly functional entertainment. A nice follow-up to the cult film from 1980.

Sequel to Friday the 13th from 1980. In this 2nd part, the killer Jason makes his appearance and he would later become the symbol of this horror series. He doesn't really make much of an impression yet and he can't match Betsy Palmer, who played his mother in the previous part.

Nothing has changed about the concept. We are in a summer camp again, this time a few meters away from the old summer camp Camp Crystal Lake from part 1. As a viewer you shouldn't think too much about that, because what project developer would think of building a summer camp nearby a place where several teenagers were brutally murdered a few years earlier? I don't think such a camp would be well attended unless parents are eager to get rid of their children!

The characters in this 2nd part are even less impressive than those in the first film. The 'kills' are better, but otherwise this sequel contains the same weaknesses as the original. The plot is boring and therefore there is no tension. It's not much more than teenagers being slaughtered one by one. The location of the summer camp is still nice, but very little is done with it in this film.

After 2 films I am done with this series. The only film I still want to see is Jason X, but I'll pass on the other parts.
