Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan plot

"NEW YORK HAS A NEW PROBLEM."

When two teenagers anchor their boat near Camp Crystal Lake, they accidentally bring dead mass murderer Jason Voorhees back to life. He kills the two and boards a large cruise ship. The ship is about to sail to Manhattan with a large group of students. But with Jason on board, it doesn't look like many of them will ever get to see The Big Apple.

Pretty bad. Together with part 5 so far clearly the least. Maybe this one is even less. The kills are still decent but how many coincidences are there in this film. Jason keeps popping up over and over, when he just can't figure out where they've gone. It is also the first time that he goes into a city so openly and no one can stop him. Everyone seems to know Jason from the legends, but when he stands in front of the people, they don't know exactly who he is. The camp feeling is also missing in this film. Although a lot takes place in a limited location on a boat, once in the city you no longer have that campy feeling at all. The reason Jason ignores everyone except Rennie and her boyfriend is never made clear. In terms of acting, it's pretty weak and I was really annoyed by the lack of credibility.

Part 8.

A Friday the 13th that finally seemed to deviate from the formula. I was really looking forward to it beforehand, because after watching the woods for 7 films, I thought it would be nice to see Jason go to the city. An environment that can lead to great new things, but that's not happening here.

Especially since at least half of it, about an hour, takes place on a boat and in a movie called "Jason takes Manhattan" that's not exactly what you're waiting for. In addition, the creativity is limited to just getting Jason out of the woods, furthermore this film obediently follows a lot of guidelines from other F13 films and that is a shame in the back of your mind.

Hodder remains a nice Jason, although his face reveal is very silly. Furthermore, as an actor, he remains just a bit more menacing, stronger and bigger compared to the other Voorhees actors. I'm quite happy with it, because they used to come across as clumsy. There's really something here that you can be afraid of, although the remake continues to have the scariest Jason, Hodder can't compete with that.

The course of the film is not very special and despite the fact that the last 40 minutes are a bit more fun, this film remains a bit boring as a result. The kills, with a few minor exceptions, are extremely dull and easy. Again a step backwards compared to part 7. Instead of more intense they become more and more tame, which is a shame.

It also all takes longer than necessary, whereby the first hour could have been greatly shortened. The acting is just a bit better and Jason is more fun, but this installment is another setback in the series. The atmosphere is still fairly portrayed, but given the concept, this film is a nice disappointment. So you see that a bigger budget does not lead to a better film.

Big break with the previous parts, not only because we're moving away from Camp Crystal Lake here, but also because this is more action horror than slasher. Film is also largely a ridiculous variation on the theme, at times really bad. The final is still exciting. For now, the odd parts are the best. The even share the least. This is the weakest episode so far.
