Just before she is cut to shreds, she opens her eyes and is awake again. The fact that her nightgown is showing tears doesn't really scare her. But when she hears that her best friend Nancy has dreamed about the exact same man, the nerves start to play up. Is she still safe in her dreams?

About ten years ago, my nephew, who was then about ten years old, came to my house to borrow a film. During that time he often came to me to borrow movies, and this time he wanted to watch a 'scary' movie. I also thought he was ready, because he wasn't really scared. I gave him 'A Nightmare on Elm Street', a 1984 comedy horror directed by horror specialist Wes Craven. I saw the movie once as a teenager and I can remember finding it very entertaining at the time. I did make the condition that his parents would watch, so that they could turn him off if it all got too exciting.

The next day I heard from his mother that they had already watched the film, along with a number of friends. And although my nephew could handle him himself, his friends had all wet their beds at night. Well, if I'd known that, I might have been better off giving The Gremlins or something.

Yesterday I watched the film for the second time, and actually I still find the film more comic than scary. The film is about a group of teenagers (including a very young Johnny Depp), who are haunted in their dreams by the creepy Freddy Krueger (played by a fantastically painted Robert Englund). If they don't wake up in time, they are brutally slaughtered. And of course that happens a few times. Very entertaining for adults, but I can imagine this can be quite exciting for young children.

The movie got a dozen sequels, all with Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, but I'm not going to watch them. I have the feeling that they all build on the same idea, and in that respect nothing beats the excellent first part. 4*

Oof.

I was prepared for a disappointing review, but it's worse than I suspected. Freddy especially, with his peekaboo persona, ridiculous voice and total lack of threat. What a flip flop.

The special effects sometimes don't cooperate, but it's more than that. Whenever it has to get scary, Freddy changes into kind of Jan Klaassen and the soundtrack switches to synth hectic with a slapstick edge, so it never really gets scary.

The film is actually at its best outside of the murders, when the soundtrack keeps a low profile and a creepy atmosphere is built up. Until the moment Freddy shows up again to kill the tension with madness. And with clumsiness, especially in the last half hour, which evokes more similarities with Home Alone than you would want from a horror.

Slight deception. With a badass bogeyman, an oversture soundtrack and outdated effects, there is little to keep the iconic status alive. Oh, and that ending? 2*

Rewatch !

Mwah, actually less fun than in my memory. Couple of nice scenes, yes...but it doesn't get really exciting and the story has little to offer outside of the dreams. There are no captivating characters and horror icon Freddy still manages to make little impression. I lower my score to a 6/10.
