I first came into contact with The Evil Dead through the remake of director Fede Alvarez. I still remember that I thought this was a very disgusting movie in 2013. It literally rains blood. This original version looks more like an amateur movie to me and the movie is hopelessly outdated. Incredibly cheap and it's funny what you can do with puree, berry juice and I know what else.

I don't understand why this gets such a high score. Sam Raimi is a fine director but this is just a typical B-movie without a budget. Like many other MM'ers, I'm not a fan of remakes, but the 2013 version is a lot better. I certainly expected more from this since the Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead was also quite funny. Not great, but more fun than this. There is nothing comical about it at all, it is taken too seriously for that.

Considering the limited resources Raimi and his crew had to make this film, the result is quite commendable. I know a lot of (more contemporary) films with a budget ten times the size that are not that good. Fun fact that Joel Coen collaborated on this as an assistant editor. For the rest it really does look like a school project and the passion they put into it is clearly visible. Raimi even conjures up some nice shots.

Evil Dead is a big horror classic in the books and the top lists and one of the first big splatter films, but just like Friday the 13th, it is partly a disappointment if I see the film separately from its status. For 85 minutes there were quite a few boring, slow, repetitive moments in between. Evil Dead was definitely a milestone then, but now I mainly saw an outdated film that has already been surpassed by its own remake. I've outgrown these kinds of movies (doesn't bother me much... stay unmoved) but I do have a lot of respect for them.

It's the first time I'm giving it a look, it will be the last. I thought it was messy and amateurish, and it certainly didn't stand the test of time. I don't know if I should chuckle or if it's just plain laughable. The irritating screams, the idiotic make-up, the wafer-thin storyline, compensating with jerky camera work, and did I really see stop-motion a few times? For others this is cult, for me it's junk. *1.5
