The stagecoaches owned by Colonel Parker are robbed and the coachmen are killed. The Duchess, the aunt of red-haired Red Ryder, sends a letter to Red to help Parker. Businessman Ernest Murphy and his band of outlaws intercept this letter and they hire "The Idaho Kid" to kill Red. But Red overpowers The Idaho Kid and he then impersonates him to infiltrate Murphy's gang. Murphy soon realizes that Red is not the man he hired and blames him for stealing a gold shipment. Red's young friend Little Beaver helps him escape Sheriff Peabody with his posse and they both go on a hunt for Murphy's gang.
