A great film in which a man finds a suitcase full of money after a drug deal goes wrong. The pace is quite slow, but this certainly contributes to the film's tension (as does the absence of music). The scenes are very well constructed; the dialogue-free scenes, in particular, are simply pure cinema. The dialogue the film does contain is often either moving or sharp. And despite the film's rather serious tone, there is definitely a healthy dose of black humor to be found. All the actors deliver excellent performances, with Javier Bardem being memorable as the ruthless killer.

Increased to 4.5 stars after revision.

OK, I'll be part of this world.

Oddly enough, this is my first Coen Brothers film; I have seen Joel's two classics, but I have never seen them direct together. So far so good. Although the films always come across well, somehow they don't really excite me. The dry humor doesn't really stick with me, and perhaps I am too slow to actually notice it sharply; furthermore, the symbolism and the ultimate reasons behind the story do very little for me. I mostly see it as it is, except that for me, Ed's part had a distinct, atmospheric meaning.

Aside from the Coen hype, which didn't quite grab me, you do get a particularly strong film. What struck me most was that it was incredibly nerve-wracking and suspenseful; I have rarely seen such beautiful build-up using so little. The use of light and shadows was also a huge strength, which naturally added to the atmosphere.

The cast does a fine job, especially Anton, who is quite a memorable character; however, the dialogue between the characters fell flat for me. I can see they are trying, but as I mentioned before, the penny drops a bit too late regarding the humor, and by the time I manage to analyze it, the joke or the stylish element—like you find in some other films, for example, a conversation that puts a smile on your face—is long gone.

Strong film, but the Coen brothers haven't completely convinced me yet. I'm not exactly dying to watch more of their work either, but I will give them a chance someday. If it comes my way, it comes my way. For now, 3.5 stars.

Revisiting this powerful crime thriller, the TV premiere. The atmosphere remains very strong and Jones and Bardem deliver stellar performances. Brolin also impresses.
