Agatha Christie's Poirot plot

When the Germans invaded Belgium in 1914, the civilian population was hit hard. Many Belgian citizens flee to the neutral Netherlands or to England. One of them is Hercule Poirot, a former police officer. Poirot is lovingly cared for at Styles St. Mary in England and develops an affection for his new homeland. After the war, he settles as a private detective in London, in a flat in Whitehaven Mansions. He teams up with former British Army officer Captain Arthur Hastings and his secretary Miss Lemon.

Top series. Just always annoys me with the episodes in the middle east. Poirot comes out best when set in Europe. Thursday night regular for me.

Ten of Agatha Christie's shorter stories were adapted in the first season. These were expanded with comedic moments and action scenes, to get to fifty-minute episodes and to make it visually appealing. David Suchet presents the best version of Poirot, with the mannerisms, the Walloon accent and the trimmed mustache. The Belgian detective suffers from OCD, because everything has to be symmetrical, neat and precise. Captain Hastings, Miss Lemon and Chief Inspector Japp are featured in almost every episode, although they often don't appear in the original stories. The thoroughly British Hastings is there for comic relief, to spread false theories, as a conversation partner and as a driver. Speaking with a flat accent, Japp is a sniffer dog who can follow a trail with doggedness, but cannot reason on his own.

The crime intrigues are followed fairly faithfully, but the location and time are often changed. Different parts of England are covered, from London to rural villages. The trip to Rhodes is a sunny change. Poirot then wears white once. A cross-section of the population is shown, from maids to the nobility. Everything is set in the early 1930s, with appropriate clothing, attributes, vehicles, music and relaxation. The title sequence contains geometric figures that were typical of Art Deco. Peter Gunning's music is one of the better TV tunes.

Favorite episodes: 1, 6, 9.
