Complete Unknown

Reasonable. I think films can be quite mysterious and a bit ambiguous, but Complete Unknown makes it very colorful. Quite a lot can be left to the interpretation of the viewer, but the motives of the characters must be clear. And their actions and motivations must be credible.

What inspires Alice to live like this is nowhere clear and more importantly, it's just not an interesting character. Even Tom is more interesting, but too little is done with him. Weisz and Shannon are excellent though and keep it interesting to watch. What director Marston wanted to say or achieve with Complete Unknown is not clear to me. The film builds towards a climax or confrontation, but it never comes. Complete Unknown goes out like a candle instead of a smashing finale. Too bad, because the fantastic poster and actors like Weisz and Shannon promised a lot of good.

As a Valentine's gift from the cable company, I thought "why not," it's free after all, and with Shannon and Weisz you at least have acting potential. Anyway, I'm in the film and the way Alice (Weisz) comes on the scene promises a puzzling sequel; her name has fairytale allure anyway and in combination with frogs, the trail is all the way to the rabbits. That they share a past with Tom (Shannon) was a no-brainer. Tom was already in doubt before her reappearance; his work was a lengthy exercise in regulating, without satisfaction. Should he go with his wife, stay behind or start something completely new. Love cannot be caught in clichés or in well-trodden institutions such as marriage. The fact that Tom wants to know from Alice how she does that "go away" spoke volumes to me! Moreover, the addition "At least you know where to find me" hinted in a similar direction. And, Tom played along with the sprained ankle.

And so, quite a good film, because De Liefde still got, were it unspoken, the last word, according to my view.
