Horror, western, thriller, melodrama... Brimstone cannot really be categorized and although that is no guarantee of quality, it does mean that director Martin Koolhoven has succeeded in making a film that is never predictable. Brimstone is divided into 4 chapters, which are not told chronologically. That is not just a gimmick, but creates suspense that keeps the film intriguing. In the first chapter we are introduced to a young mother [Dakota Fanning] who has lost her tongue and is threatened by a religious madman of Dutch origin, played by Guy Pearce, with a subtle but perfect Dutch accent. Later in the film, we find out how and why the young woman got her tongue out and why the preacher is so obsessed with her.
This film is certainly not suitable for people with weak stomachs, with explicit violence [in the form of abuse of people and animals and chastisement], but all this is presented in a stylish way. Fanning is too lightweight for such a heavy role and Koolhoven could have pulled the brakes on Guy Pearce [the badness drips off so much that he is not entirely credible as a preacher], but there are excellent roles from Carice van Houten and Carla Juri. Let me describe it as an original, explosive melodrama, but one that you really shouldn't miss!

Very strong film, with a cast that does a sublime job. It's great that it still has a nice playing time. I liked the third chapter the best, although the overall picture is just finished. And Dakota Fanning, I was a huge fan of her sister, now her too. Also strong Emilia Jones and of course the devilish pastor, well done. Film certainly has its hard moments, which certainly makes it stronger. The atmosphere and experience are also optimally brought to the viewer. Thought it would be fun if Dutch was spoken for a while. Anyway, I'm a fan of this.
