Contact plot

"If it's just us, it seems like an awful waste of space."

After years of searching, astronomer Ellie Arroway finally finds a radio message from an alien civilization. The message contains detailed instructions for creating a mysterious machine. The device is being built under great protest from various religious groups. The question now is who will be allowed to take a seat in the device, which is presumably a spaceship. Ellie would love to.

revision.

There are those movies that years later you wonder why they score so low. In the meantime, I can tolerate the Hollywood work a little better and I usually like these kind of "contact with aliens" movies. Although that's not exactly the reason why I revised the film. Contact is one of the blemishes on my MM review track, something I will work on in the coming years.

As for that quote, well it was just right. Despite the fact that I like the subject, this is really a completely brackish and salt-free performance. Jodie Foster is really a very boring box, that the entire first hour is devoted to her character does not make the film any better.

But what follows is also of a relatively low level. Zemeckis seems to want to go for added value, with discussions about religion and science, but does so in such an idiotic way that the film gets worse by the minute. And since the film has quite a few minutes, there is little left to assign points to.

At least not the CG, it's ugly. The soundtrack is kitschy and the acting is especially wooden and lifeless. How you can kill a fun, adventurous subject. Mno, score just stands, one of Zemeckis' worst films.

0.5*

This is a movie that can make me mad at times. An interesting story told in an extremely captivating way, with an excellent lead actress, precise direction and beautiful visuals - all of which is then torpedoed by (1) an excruciatingly bland and highly anticlimactic climax including the 2001[/i ] inspired (or stolen from that movie) gimmick of a setting that is built up from the memories of an earthling, (2) such a huge row of well-known supporting actors (Skerritt, Woods, Fichtner, Bassett, Morse, Hurt, Lowe, Busey, McConaughey) that those headlines distract from the plot ("oh, look, that's James Woods!") rather than contribute to its impact, and (3) the [i]Dynasty[ /i]-esque plot element of Ellie's boss constantly bugging her, turning off her money tap, taking her place in the spotlight, and eventually even taking her place in the alien craft - all cringe-inducing acts that make us hate David Drumlin quite a bit but that eigenl This has nothing to do with Ellie's quest nor with the central question of the film. Having seen [i]Contact three times now, I can get over my objections and enjoy the flow and sense of "spiritual adventure" of the plot and development of Ellie's character, but with name the meaninglessness of Ellie's final contact ("this is just the beginning, there's more to come, bye!") remains a thorn in my side. (Oh yes, and another plus and minus to be weighed against each other: the magnificent John Hurt who cunningly steals his two scenes versus Matthew McConaughey as the most unlikely and unbearable theologian ever seen.)

revised. Still an impressive SF film, very compelling and intelligently developed. The plot unfolds slowly but fascinatingly, with lots of compelling details and attention to both philosophical and spiritual elements. Director Robert Zemeckis artfully balances everything, aided by a strong cast and top-notch special effects. The film is visually a bit dated here and there, but for the most part everything still looks quite impressive.
