Ed Wood is in the top 3 of Tim Burton's best films, it may even be his best film. He's making a biopic of the man who is still known as the world's worst filmmaker. But instead of completely embarrassing Ed Wood, Ed Wood is a beautiful tribute to the man. Of course we see that Ed Wood is a huge naive idiot and far from a good filmmaker, but the passion radiates from him. He wants very much and does everything he can to achieve that; and that makes for hilarious moments. But besides hilarity, the drama is also very strong with Martin Landau in a phenomenal role as Bela Lugosi. Landau is by far the star of the show and quite rightly won an Oscar for the role of the downtrodden Dracula.

Furthermore, Burton has made some excellent choices. Of course the fantastic casting, but also the fact that the film is black and white (which the studio didn't really agree with). And it's nice that for this biopic they don't neatly tick off all the events from Wood's life, but make it an interesting whole. That of course means that Ed Wood is not 100% truthful and luckily so. For example, the scene in which Bela Lugosi has to fight the octopus for the shoot of Bride of the Monster
is one of the best scenes in the entire movie, but it seems to have been done by a stuntman in real life . And also Orson Welles and Wood never met. But in Ed Wood they are all important and strong scenes. Strong choices unlike biopics where one wants every detail of the real world to be correct. Or as Ed Wood says in this film: "Filmmaking is not about the tiny details. It's about the big picture." No idea if he ever said that in real life, but this 'big picture' is beautiful!

4.5 stars.

Nice Burton.

A film that he clearly had good control over, because Ed Wood is a rather different biography film compared to other biopic films. Nevertheless, it always feels like an ode to the older (horror) films thanks to the black and white photography and references to such films. Might as well with this topic.

I was very pleased with the opening with the horror slant. Nice find. After that, however, a more normal biography plot follows, but without Burton turning his stylization upside down. Ed Wood feels like a film from 1950-1960, but a lot more modern and polished. I should have thought that was boring, but the pace, the decorations and the dressing ensured that this was never the case.

Excellent acting. Only thought Landau was a lot stronger than Depp. It is a pity that his character is sometimes a bit too corny (the theatrical acting has little resemblance to the real Lugosi), but nevertheless he puts down a sympathetic and memorable figure. Depp also does a nice job and effortlessly keeps the attention, but nevertheless the film sometimes feels like a farce because of the way of acting and that sometimes causes irritation.

The story itself didn't interest me a bit, but Burton knows well what entertainment is and manages to keep your attention effortlessly for over 2 hours. The film touches on some heavier subjects without being overly sentimental. In addition, the obvious predilection for older horror films is palpable and Burton expresses that with his style. I got a good look at it.

Ed Wood may not be the best biography story. It's all a little too overpowered and comical for that, but it never loses sight of its central purpose. Visually quite successful, but the great thing is that Burton knows exactly what he is doing. I'd rather see him make these kinds of movies than the bombastic Hollywood spectacle where he has to comply with different guidelines. More than reasonable movie.
