"The Screwiest Bumstead Bombshell of Fun-Packed Merriment Drives You Into Hysterics!"

Tomorrow is Independence Day and Blondie Bumstead has spent too long working on her family to blow it up with a dangerous tradition like setting off fireworks. There is also no place in the city where there will not be a bang. She therefore decides to go to her aunt who lives in the countryside, much to the dismay of her husband Dagwood and her son Baby Dumpling. The Bumsteads then meet a young couple who have run away to get married and Blondie decides to help them.
