big 5 for this beautiful film, Hurt, Cox, Roth, Lange and Neeson, supercast, especially T. Roth could charm me again, that guy can handle all roles. Beautiful images in a somewhat wry, dark atmosphere that prevailed in the 18th century I think.....................

In 1995 this was about Braveheart's competitor (3.5*) which was slightly better. Although I expected quite a bit from Rob Roy, it has become more of a revenge adventure film than a historical drama. Rather than using the character in a political context, they preferred to turn it into a rebel with revenge motives. History was perhaps a little too ambitious for the authors. The film is otherwise beautiful and there is no boredom in it; the Scottish settings do their job, but it has become a cliché story with cliché characters and cliché situations. Tim Roth was doing well as the bad guy. The final duel in complete silence was the highlight of the film.

Finally came across this one at the thrift store because I was always curious, I knew the film from some fragments from the film program of Jac Goderie somewhere in the 90s where Tim Roth immediately left a certain impression.

Rob Roy starts fairly quickly with the hunt for a number of cattle thieves and Rob immediately shows the different sides of his character from which he continues to build. Rob Roy also turns out to be a seer, has plans and wants the best for his community, which results in a plan that is unfortunately thwarted by Killearn and Cunningham after which the problems pile up.

Neeson, never really special as an actor, is solid and good in his way. Yet most of the attention on the actor level goes to the starring roles of Tim Roth and Brian Cox, who portray the devilish duo wonderfully. Roth in particular is arrogant and pedantic with his mannerisms and may be the best reason to sit down for Rob Roy. Furthermore, Lange is always good and the young faces of Stoltz and Flemyng are nice, and then I would almost forget the always excellent John Hurt. Nice detail are the different bad teeth, nature is beautiful and the music is appropriate.

And until halfway through, this film, which is comparable to a protagonist like Braveheart, only a bit more intimate and realistic, is on its way to a good grade, after which the film falls apart during the second half and with thepregnancy of Mary[/ spoiler] becomes a bit too much drama-light with a pretty predictable ending as a result. It makes Rob Roy a film that is certainly worth watching once, and which initially also acquires a place in the collection, but is certainly not a topper.
