Cool, such a film about the American space program. Each time they were trumped by the Russians in the beginning and to keep up with the space race, the government decided to select 7 pilots and train them to become astronauts. Very nice and interesting to see how that whole process goes. It even resembles an extensive documentary, at least that's what you get when you see this film.

The Right Stuff is a tad patriotic, but there is also room for enough incompetence and ridicule as in heavily intrusive media, an endless row of exploding (unmanned) rockets and the funniest thing was that at the very beginning the government still thought it could send astronauts find in the circus . All in all with over three hours (!) playing time very interesting.

A wonderful film that takes the time to portray a lot, and as such can never be made like that again, with the poor concentration span that the current audience has. Anyone of the Thunderbirds generation will be able to effortlessly produce the names of 5 of the 7 first astronauts. Superior directing. Only awkward interlude as the astronauts look at each other knowingly, almost in love while Debussy's Clair De Lune plays. Let's take a look at that without much laughter. Nice the cameo of Chuck Yaeger himself in the film, as a bartender. He's still alive. While the actor who plays it, Sam Shepard, has since passed away. Ditto Yaeger's sidekick played by The Band drummer Levon Helm. Many actors have grown up after this 36-year-old film. Some who ramble on about American patriotism here are oblivious to the dark sides of an astronaut's fame. VP Lyndon Johnson was portrayed as a PR horny idiot. Alan Shepard would indeed go to the moon, John Glenn, who produced ready-made quotes for the press at the press conference, would later become a senator.
