Good.

This is not special cinema, but good cinema is. Adventurous, smooth, a bit tragic too; it's all in the movie. The film is well filled, without serving up too much or unnecessary scenes. The climax of the story could have been a little better.

The cast is also a big plus for the film. Jim Caviezel was ultimately unable to live up to it as a leading actor in Hollywood, but he is just a decent actor. Yet it is the supporting roles that provide a sufficiently solid basis. Guy Pearce too, but especially Richard Harris and Michael Wincott play nice roles.

Visually, director Kevin Reynolds provides the necessary assets. The locations and sets are well chosen, the soundtrack is okay. Action scenes such as the duel are also perfectly fine. The playing time is used sufficiently, although it is just too sentimental for me as a whole at times.

3.5

A skillfully crafted, atmospheric and beautifully photographed version of the classic tale, with two perfect lead roles, two excellent supporting roles (although Richard Harris is 70 years old here, he still moves remarkably smoothly and powerfully, and Luis Guzman is touching and cunning as Dante's ' "bodyguard" Jacopo) and enough speed to keep you captivated for the full two hours. And while I'm quite a fan of the Austrian Oak, I'm glad that "Arnold Schwarzenegger turned down the role of Edmond Dantes when the film was in early stages of development." (IMDb trivia page)

“What happened to your mercy?”

The Count of Monte Cristo is the ultimate revenge story based on the book by Alexander Dumas. Being unfairly locked up in a small cell, your best friend who betrayed you, your great love and child who are taken from you etc. A person becomes vengeful for less.

The first part (the captivity) is clearly the strongest, with the second part (the revenge story) feeling a bit rushed at times. Fortunately, Caviezel, Pearce, Dominczyk and Guzmán are in good shape, and the decoration of the film is also fantastic. 'Revenge is dish best served cold', and that certainly applies to Edmond Dantes. The feel good ending feels deserved.
