Transformers plot

"Their war. Our world."

A long time ago there was a war on the planet Cybertron, between the Autobots and the Decepticons. Many years later, on planet Earth, young Sam Witwicky buys his first car and discovers that it is the Autobot Bumblebee. This one is there to protect Sam, as Bumblebee is not the only Transformer to have come to Earth. The Decepticons are also on Earth and begin to attack the US military. When Sam and his girlfriend Mikaela discover that the military plans to destroy both the enemy Decepticons and the peace-loving Autobots, they try to come up with a new plan to stop the Decepticons.

OK.

Typical Bay. Over the top high-budget spectacle. So also in Transformers. Never been interested in this franchise, but in Bay as a director, and this has to be one of his "highlights". He shows that with beautiful special effects and bombastic action scenes.

The robots are of course very nicely done, but that doesn't make the film a masterpiece. Bay also had better not opt for those cliché characters. That smart female person, you can see right away that this is going to be another know-it-all who is thrown away in the beginning and then taken into consideration later.

Other characters also have little depth and all you really have left is the biggest action scenes, which are actually quite boring until the last hour where the film gets much better and beautiful action scenes are put down. Because of the visual level, I can't possibly give it a fail and it gets a six.

2 stars for the beauty of Megan Fox. Otherwise a ridiculous film like only Michael Bay can make, with too fast camera work, unnecessary explosions and childish car robots... sigh, boring!

The first time I saw it I was pleasantly surprised that it could still be a nice film, because I held my heart that an in itself nice franchise would be badly damaged. And rightly so, because the typical Michael Bay elements are indeed present:

- noisy machos and military display of power;

-a fat negro who acts like a child;

-a schlemiel who assumes too much authority;

-other funny vervelios like that little robot;

- rude sex jokes;

-a very wholly made up and dressed vulgar part (just for the Megan Fox fans: my criticism focuses much more on the cheap way Bay displays her than on Fox itself);

-explosions;

-even more explosions.

Still, there are some nice things in it too, Bumblebee's interactions with Sam, solid sound effects, the great voice of Optimus (and it's hardly a sound effect, Peter Cullen has been doing this magnificently since time immemorial). The effects are pretty well done too, although the transformations are very fast.

But after a second viewing, I didn't even feel like watching all the action scenes. It's all too long and too much. What is often lacking in Bay's films is something of a suspense and measured, tight action. Less really is more. And the humor is often just too rude. A Bay film is often too large a portion of fries with a bit of mayonnaise that is too thick. But at least the fries with this first one were still slightly crispy.
