Hallelujah at the credits! Free at last from this incoherent, hysterical vehicle. Don't believe my retina could have tolerated more nonsense. Positive point: also had a workout, because my legs and buttocks have made overturning hours.

Do not get me wrong; I like the Transformers, but then it has to be about the Transformers. In my opinion they were more of a sidekick than protagonists in The Last Knight. The storyline swings in all directions, making the whole thing a chaos and the film just doesn't come out well.

Dosage is not for Bay. Every shot is hysterical, filled with explosions, cringingly bad humor, superfluous characters or non-relevant information. So much happens that the so-called epic moments are lost in the potpourri of overkill. A shame, I would have liked the film to center more around Optimus, Megatron and Quintessa - there would have been profit to be had here.

Bay introduces several interesting plots, but does little or nothing with them. His outwardly typical filters really can't do anymore, if you ask me (Wahlberg looks almost orange with pink lip gloss). Fox lookalike Haddock suddenly wears a new outfit from one scene to the next without carrying any luggage. Completely unnecessary, like so much in this film. Bay just stuffs too much into the mix. It's sad to see celebrities like Optimus and bad guy Megatron being stripped of their myth and just filling up the footage. Nothing is worked out resulting in zero comma zero tension, coherence or involvement with the characters.

The sum has become a bombastic, meaningless and visually exhausting session. No, Bay. Just don't do it anymore.

Tired party.

If you fall asleep on this last part of the Transformers series, it's not that strange. The excess of action is tiring, not just a little. Because Bay pulls out all the stops and fires all his action at the viewer at lightning speed. In 3D even more beautiful and with Dolby Atmos you can even hear the spaceships literally flying above your head. In fact, the 3D Bluray (which is released in a 3-disc edition together with the 2D version on a separate disc and the bonus material on the third Bluray) secretly seems like a test disc for this sound technology. In any case, this is an audio-visual party.

But despite all the pomp and circumstance, it is really too much. It's nice that Bay, and especially Hopkins, doesn't take themselves seriously. For a moment this is sublimely expressed when a robot literally swells the film music. However, it is one of the few acting comedic moments. And so you keep watching - sometimes with your mouth open - at all the craziness that thunders past. The story can't be followed after half an hour, which only adds to the chaos. When a drunken Merlin in the Middle Ages drinks his whiskey from a screw-top bottle in the first minutes, that pretty much says it all.

Bay is anything but well thought out and although you don't have to be fine tuned to keep this series alive, a little more effort would be nice. Some sequences are so oddly edited that you have to see it to believe it. It is strange that something with so much money poured into it is apparently subject to little evaluation and scrutiny. However, for people who like trailers, this is a bull's eye, because the film definitely feels like one despite its long length. An achievement in itself. Fortunately, during the roller coaster ride, you'll hardly be bored and, strangely enough, it does maintain. But that's about all.

**½

Thanks to Paramount for the review copy.

Call it a guilty pleasure, but I do like the Transformers series. No nonsense films with explosions, Transformers and bad humor. Especially the first trilogy is enjoyable, but from Age of Exctinction it becomes less. The addition of Mark Wahlberg has not done the series any good. If you're acting worse than Shia LaBeouf & Megan Fox, you should ask yourself questions. Shia's erroneous style suited the franchise better than Mark's swagger.

Anthony Hopkins remains a good actor who did not let himself go like Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken or Dustin Hoffman. But he isn't quite right either.

The movie is the worst part of the series. There is still enough action and humor to enjoy, but it is sometimes hard to find.
