The Brides of Dracula plot

"He Turned Innocent Beauty Into Unspeakable Horror."

Young Marianne (Yvonne Monlaur) is passing through when she is stranded in a small village. She is invited by Baroness Meinster (Martita Hunt) to spend the night in her castle. The Baroness holds her own son (David Peel) captive, saying he is mentally ill and depraved. Marianne manages to free him, but the young Baron Meinster is as bloodthirsty as he is attractive. On her escape from the castle, Marianne encounters Dr. Van Helsing (Peter Cushing), who has just arrived in the region at the request of the local priest.

A magnificently baroque Hammer production. David Peel is certainly no Christopher Lee, but that would be an unfair comparison. I think he plays the role of the supreme vampire with gusto, as a kind of slick, sharp-suited guy who could just as easily be working behind a bank counter, but who happens to possess a handsome set of fangs. Peter Cushing and Yvonne Moniaur also deliver excellent performances. But essentially, everything about this film is good. The settings are a feast for the eyes and contribute tons of atmosphere. Typical but enjoyable chase scenes in the baron's castle. Very fitting, majestic organ music on the soundtrack. Magnificent work by director Terence Fisher. I found this film much more exciting than its predecessor, The Horror of Dracula, which is largely due to the story's indebtedness to the well-known Stoker classic. For its time, the film must have made quite an impression, and I absolutely still consider it a success.

The atmosphere and locations are excellent, but the story is disappointing. It's rather chaotically constructed, with plot holes and little suspense. This is mainly due to the performance of Baron Meinster (David Peel), who never manages to come across as creepy. Peter Cushing is on fire as Van Helsing, and Yvonne Monlaur as Marianne is also quite appealing. A beautiful, elegant woman who gives the film that extra something. Another plus is Martita Hunt's convincing performance as Baroness Meinster, who lends a darker touch to the film. Unfortunately, the story is weak, as certain scenes remain unclear, such as the nasty man jumping on the carriage at the beginning. Given the title, you'd expect a lot more female victims of the vampire. 5/10

Unfortunately there is no Dracula and Christopher Lee is sorely missed in this film, but the atmosphere is there, his replacement, Baron Meinster does only moderately, and the final action scene starts off promising but ends a bit weak and is not very spectacular.

The leading actress Yvonne Monlaur as Marianne is a beautiful lady who is allowed to carry the first part of the film until Peter Cushing takes over from her.

Although Dracula is in the title, he does not play a role in it, it is nevertheless a good vampire film from the Hammer stable in terms of atmosphere.
