I was curious about this Werewolf movie by Hammer for a while and then I found a beautiful restoration. The movie tells the story of how the werewolf Leon is born and how his change is fueled by anger.

Hammer gives a whole new meaning to the myth of the Werewolf. The wolf is the son of a feral beggar and a woman who cannot speak. In itself nice for a change, but give me the story of the man who is bitten by a werewolf or even better a kind of detective story where the main character has to find out who the werewolf is (Silver Bullet). Furthermore, it took a very long time before the film finally started. Oliver Reed only shows up halfway through. He delivers an excellent performance and promises to become a great actor early on, especially the tragedy and the fear of hurting his beloved he portrays excellently. Unfortunately, the ending is a bit rushed and the wolf hardly comes into action.

The film is beautifully shot and for Hammer's part there was a lot of location shooting. The night shots were very atmospheric and the Werewolf looked good. Great music.

All in all, a bit less than expected, but certainly not a bad film from the Hammer stable. I still like those Hammer films. Especially the Dracula film and The Hound of the Baskervilles I still think are very cool.

Cleverly constructed story in which the werewolf story contains more drama than horror. But the way of narration is very strong. You could summarize the film in 3 phases. The story starts with a beggar played by Richard Wordsworth. In the second phase, the beautiful Yvonne Romain comes into the spotlight as a maid and in the last phase Oliver Reed makes his entrance. The role is tailor-made for him. He comes across very convincingly as the beast who you don't see too much. But the make-up is fine. Unfortunately, the last phase suffers from a problem due to the absence of Yvonne Romain. Yet you see her with Reed on film posters or photos. Was that a form of publicity campaign at that time?
Still a bit of a disappointment because Catherine Feller, Reed's lover, can't compete with Romain in terms of looks and performance. 7/10

Quite a nice Hammer where I was completely sucked in. It starts very nicely with the tramp and his reception at the castle. It felt a bit fairytale-like with a very pleasant and cranked up plot. The decor is also nicely taken care of.

A bit of a shame that you don't see the beast that much. For a horror picture maybe just a bit too little, but as a drama/romance this is a more than fine film. Excellent Reed also seen here. Successful classic!
