A nice film that suffers a bit from the not very interesting story, but Almodovar manages to make something out of it with his amazing talent. In the beginning it meant very little to me, but as the film progressed I had the impression that Pedro also started to feel more like it and then you still get those brilliant hilarious-moving scenes that he has a patent on (one example : When Leo has just tried to commit suicide, she wanders around the city in a daze and ends up in a rally where she meets her editor, and she falls into his arms crying, while a hundred students stand around them jumping and shouting where they all get fucked by the government I think that's just brilliant ) I also like how it all ends in the end, sentimental as hell but still acceptable. And now that I think about it, the entire film is actually full of those little genius finds that still lift the banal story to a higher level. The fact remains that the story could have been better, but I still want to give it 4 stars.

This is again a typical film that shows how much Almodovar has and has benefited from a filmmaker like Douglas Sirk. Warm colors, overly sentimental storylines and in many ways this is also a typical women's film (I'm going to be so vague, sorry), but it works very well. Almodovar has more humor and that is precisely the nuance that his films can use, although it also works without humor in Sirk.

Indeed, perhaps not his best work, but that says much more about films such as Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios, Todo sobre Mi Madre or even Volver. In all respects this is a nice addition to his colorful oeuvre. Somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars. Because of the low average, I give him the benefit of the doubt.

I like Almodovar's work, but too often it's all or nothing. Here I also have the feeling of 'just not'. The story is too short to really catch on. Here and there a scene that cheered me up a bit (the scene during the street protest), but there were not enough of them.

Characters that only get a little more color later and an Almodovar that only occasionally shows his cinematographic talent. A nice prequel to what will come from Almodovar, perhaps, but this one just didn't make it.
